NETWORKING: SPACE

A collaborative work environment based on the creation of structures out of the grouping of spatial units. Every spatial unit is described according to three dimensions: geometric, perceptive, narrative. Every dimension corresponds to one of the Cortesian axes in space. The geometric dimension refers to the space attributes (shape, color, components). The perceptive dimension has to do with the impressions and emotions that the space causes in the viewer. The narrative dimension is more about the description of the events related to the space.

When working with this environment, every student inserts a cubic unit in the structure, relating it with the others, in one of the three dimensions: geometric, perceptive and narrative. For establishing a relationship with other spatial element, previously inserted; the student first has to find out its spatial features. From the structure of relations, created in the previous interface, it is possible to navigate from one space to another, referring to the formerly established associations among them. When going through the spaces, students can leave comments about the space and about the relationships with other spaces. In this way, navigation becomes a process of generation of knowledge about the multidimensional perception of the space.

This environment has been awarded first prize in the category 'Interface design' in the international competition, the ACAD Digital Design Exhibition 2002, organized by the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture, United States.

It has been used to do the exercises on the theme SPACE, from 2001 to 2004.
