Exhibition of the work of Jaume Plensa at MACBA, until 22.4.19. Plensa is an artist of materials, sensations and ideas. His references include literature, especially poetry, music, religion and thought. He considers himself, above all, a sculptor, although his creative process has included multiple disciplines. His work addresses the very condition of being: its physical and spiritual essence, ontological awareness of present and past, moral codes and dogmas, and our relationship with nature. What we cannot explain is, precisely, what makes us human. Plensa’s objective is not to create objects, but to develop relationships that embrace everyone.

Royal Academy of Arts, London, until March 31, 2019 "Bill Viola / Michelangelo. Life Death Rebirth". In 2006, pioneering video artist Bill Viola saw the finest of a collection of these drawings at Windsor Castle, and was astonished by the Renaissance master’s expressive use of the body to convey emotional and spiritual states. Although created in a radically different medium, Viola’s own works also grapple with life’s fundamental questions, asking us to consider the thresholds between birth, life and death. Both artists harness the symbolic power of sacred art, and both show us physical extremes and moments of transcendence.   This exhibition explores the affinities between Bill Viola and Michelangelo, and is conceived as an immersive journey through the cycle of life.

La Pedrera, until 27.1.19 "Open Works. Art in Movement, 1955-1975". The exhibition consists of a choice of works from the leading figures in an international artistic revolution which erupted in Europe in the fifties and sixties. The works revolve around the concept of openness, movement and space, getting away from the traditional categories of painting and sculpture and conventional subjects through experimentation and research with new materials and media and the opening up of the artistic space.  The new ideas go beyond the boundaries of a purist aesthetic and are closer to materials and technologies belonging to science and industry, making it possible to explore space, light and movement.
